Library……
May 2015……Let's Eat!!!
Can’t boil
water? Or looking for something new and different to perk up dinner?
As
usual, your TAOS PUBLIC LIBRARY is ready to come to the rescue!
There are over 250 books on every aspect of
cooking, from soup to nuts, from here in New Mexico to (among others) Africa,
Italy, France, Thailand, India, Indonesia, China, Malaysia, Vietnam, Morocco, Lebanon, and.
You
will find almost all cookbooks on the 641 shelves; we’ll indicate those that
are in the Southwest Room.
Let’s
begin here at home, with CHEFS OF TAOS by Cathleen Tomlinson, with photos by
the gifted photographer Zoe Zimmerman. There’s also DELIA’S COOKING: A TAOS
STORY, by Delia Archuleta, and EL NORTE: THE CUISINE OF NORTHERN MEXICO by
James W. Peyton. These are in the
Southwest Room.
Going
gradually south there is SALSA AND TACOS, courtesy of the Santa Fe School of
Cooking, GOING TO SEED: EDIBLE PLANTS OF THE SOUTHWEST by Kabana Farnsworth
(581.632Far); THE ROUTE 66 COOKBOOK:
COMFORT FOOD FROM THE MOTHER ROAD by Marian Clark.
And MEXICAN:HEALTHY WAYS WITH A FAVORITE CUISINE by Jane Milton.
Many dishes have transmogrified from Native America (the foremost
example, perhaps, being succotash) but there are many more treasures to try.
Dip into BODY, MIND AND SPIRIT: NATIVE COOKING OF THE AMERICAS by Beverly Cox
and Martin Jacobs. This is in the IP (Indigenous People) section, to the left
as you enter: IP 641.592Cox.
Salvation for the too-busy person lies in
the crockpot—excuse me, “Slow Cooker.” This is a wonderful boon for the working
person: you cut everything up, throw it in, turn it on low, go to work, and
behold: you come home all tuckered out, open the door and—wafts out the lovely
perfume of dinner—ready! Try THE GOURMET SLOW COOKER by Lynn Alley.
Also good for the slow cooker, and
inexpensive—an important consideration nowadays! Are bean recipes: the
appropriately named BEANS: MORE THAN 200 DELICIOUS
WHOLESOME RECIPES
FROM AROUND THE WORLD by Aliza Green.
“Wholesome” reminds that we all need to
Eat Those Vegetables: the straightforwardly titled VEGETARIAN by Sue Ashworth.
Barbecue season is almost upon us;
everyone has their definitive, sure-fire recipe, but there’s always something
to learn: Steve Rachlin’s PLANET BARBECUE.
This just
begins to skim the surface of the 250 books about cooking in the Taos Public
Library. Whether you’re Julia Child-level or just beginning, there’s something
for you!
